Senior Pet Care

Watching our pets grow older is one of the bittersweet parts of sharing our lives with them. At Sheridan Pet Care, we're here to help make sure your pet's golden years are as comfortable, healthy, and full of life as possible.

Caring for Your Aging Pet

Most dogs are considered seniors around age seven, and cats around nine. Because pets age more rapidly than we do, health changes can develop quickly. This is why regular veterinary care becomes even more important during the senior years. We recommend twice-yearly wellness exams and bloodwork for senior pets so we can closely track how your pet is aging and catch any developing concerns early, before they become bigger problems.

What Senior Wellness Looks Like

Senior wellness visits go a little deeper than a standard checkup. Routine diagnostics are among the most important parts of a senior exam: bloodwork helps us monitor red and white blood cell counts and evaluate kidney, liver, pancreas, thyroid, and other organ function. Conditions like diabetes, reduced kidney function, and thyroid disorders become more common as pets age, and early detection makes a real difference in how effectively we can manage them. In some cases, we may also recommend diagnostic imaging to get a more complete picture of your pet's health.

Dental health is always important, but it's especially critical for senior pets. Periodontal disease can take a greater toll on older animals, so a dental evaluation is always part of any senior screening.

Knowing What to Watch For

You know your pet better than anyone, and that makes you an important part of their care team. As dogs and cats enter their senior years, it's helpful to keep an eye out for changes in behavior, appetite, mobility, or energy levels. Signs of cognitive dysfunction — such as confusion, wandering, or incontinence — are also worth mentioning at your next visit. These conversations help us tailor your pet's care plan and ensure we're supporting them in every way we can.

We have more tools and treatments than ever to help our senior pets live their best lives. If you have questions about senior care or would like to schedule a wellness visit, contact us today at (307) 763-0751.
